Origins of Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a new Year 10 student was harassed and threatened for wearing pink. These students bought dozens of pink shirts and distributed them to their classmates to wear the next day. The word got out online and hundreds of students showed up in pink, some from head-to-toe, to stand together against bullying.

The event started when students David Shepherd and Travis Price saw another student, who was wearing a pink shirt, being bullied in their Central Kings Rural High School in Nova Scotia, Canada, and deciding to show support for the student by getting everyone at their school to wear pink the following day. They bought over 50 pink shirts and gave them out to their fellow students to wear in solidarity, and to stand up to bullying. Since then it has become an international, world-wide day to wear pink, and stand in solidarity against bullying of any kind!
