Chapter Books for Older Readers - A STRANGER AT HOME
A True Story.
"The celebrated story of an Inuvialuk First Nations young girl's resistance and strength at residential school." Now in an updated 10th anniversary edition, which includes photographs from the author's family album.
Listed as one of Ten Best Children's Books of The Year, and a First Nation Communities Read Selection. FATTY LEGS is the true memoir of Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, as told to her daughter-in-law, Christy Jordan-Fenton. With artwork by Liz Amini-Holmes. The three also collaborated on A STRANGER AT HOME.
A STRANGER AT HOME follows the story of ten-year old Margaret-Olemaun as she returns home to her family. She has been away for two whole years, and she can hardly contain her excitement to see them again! But, when she stands before them...her mother shouts out: "Not my girl!" She does not recognize her own daughter anymore! Margaret must learn her language again... she must learn to eat her family's food again... Sadly, she has become a stranger to her own people.
In this extraordinary sequel, Margaret begins the painful journey of learning how to fit in again. She must learn who Olemaun is once more. And, with the powerful love of her family she does. This is a moving, and lovingly written memoir of spirit and determination.
Sadly, the celebrated Indigenous First Nations author Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton died in April 2021. Her legacy lives on in her powerful words.
She and her family are from Fort St.John in British Columbia. More from our FIRST NATIONS Collection sold separately.
