A True Story.

"The celebrated story of an Inuvialuk First Nations young girl's resistance and strength at residential school." Now in an updated 10th anniversary edition, which includes photographs from the author's family album.

Listed as one of Ten Best Children's Books of The Year, and a First Nation Communities Read Selection. FATTY LEGS is the true memoir of Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, as told to her daughter-in-law, Christy Jordan-Fenton. With artwork by Liz Amini-Holmes. The three also collaborated on A STRANGER AT HOME. Sold separately.

FATTY LEGS is the nickname given to Margaret at the residential school, when the cruel Nun, simply called The Raven, makes her wear red stockings instead of grey ones. But, Olemaun, who has had her braids cut off and her named changed to Margaret, will not let the torment wear her down. She has come to this place against her parent's wishes to learn to read. And, she is determined to succeed. How she overcomes all obstacles, and cruel punishments is an uplifting story...truly universal for all children in its message of determination.

Sadly, the celebrated Indigenous First Nations author Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton died in April 2021. Her legacy lives on in her powerful words.

She and her family are from Fort St.John in British Columbia. More from our FIRST NATIONS Collection sold separately.
