First Nation indigenous artist Julie Flett has created a lovely, lyrical story, beautifully illustrated with her trademark collage like illustrations. Her colour pallet choice reflects the colours in the landscape she loves so much.

BIRDSONG is a love letter to children to find the joy and beauty in unexpected places. It is a simple story of a little girl befriending an elderly neighbour.
Katherena is encouraged by her mother to visit Agnes. And Agnes shows her the joy found in every season, and how much the two of them share in their love of nature and art found all around. Children will respond to the tender friendship that develops, and the inter-generational support and love that grows.

Julie Flett is proud of her Cree-Metis heritage. She includes a glossary for a few words used in the story. Her books have been chosen as Canada's First Nation Communities READ title selections.
