Author Kim Lewis grew up in Montreal, and like FLOSS, left the city for the hills of Scotland. Her storyline, and luminescent illustrations reflect her love for the rugged landscapes, and the tough farming life, and the sheep and dogs, that inhabit these northern hills. 

FLOSS is a young border collie who belongs to an old man in a town and loves playing ball with the children in the park. When his son's old dog Nell, can no longer work the sheep on the farm, he decides to give his son Floss. Somewhere in her memory Floss knows about sheep and she soon learns how to be a good sheepdog. But one day when Floss is on the hillside herding sheep, she sees the children playing with a new ball and can't resist joining in. Meanwhile the sheep escape — and the farmer is very angry. But, he soon realizes that Floss is very good at working with the sheep, but she and the children deserve time to play ball together too!
